Depression

Depression is a condition that puts an individual in a state of low mood, decreases spirit, and instils aversion towards some or all activities by affecting the thoughts and feelings of the individual. Hence it is also termed as a disability. This further on affects the behaviour of the individual as it affects the decision making capacity, concentration and memory. People suffering from depression may lose their appetite or indulge in excessive eating, experience fatigue frequently, sleep excessively or get diagnosed with insomnia, experience digestive issues, energy fluctuations and contemplate or attempt suicide. There are numerous causes for depression. It could be because of a negative event in someone’s life, a side effect of medical treatments, nutritional deficiencies or diseases, addiction to substances etc.

In ayurveda, depression is caused due to an imbalance in one or all of the doshas. For example, depression due to loss results in imbalance of the Vata dosha while depression due to excessive attachment results in imbalance of the Kapha dosha and a sense of failure occurs due to imbalance in the Pitta dosha. Hence our doctors carefully identify the prakriti to ensure the doshas are treated accurately. In case the diagnosis suggests an imbalance in all the doshas, we plan programmes to restore balance in all the doshas through effective Ayurvedic therapies.
