Airport

Cochin International Airport is located in Kochi city, in the state of Kerala, India. It is about 13 kilometres away from Green Gram Wellness Village. It is the largest and the busiest airports in Kerala, spanning over 2,000 acres of land and ranks seventh in India for international passenger traffic and serves as a primary base for Air India Express operations. The Cochin International Airport is the first airport that was formed in India under a partnership called the Public Private Partnership where about 10,000 non-resident Indians from 30 different countries came together to fund the construction of the airport. It is also the world’s first entirely solar powered airport with a solar plant built to provide uninterrupted and dedicated solar power to the airport. The airport provides domestic and international connectivity within Asia and Middle East provides air taxi services, connectivity via road to nearby locations through buses and pre-paid taxis and helicopter taxi services called Helitaxi.

Initially, around 1935, there was only a small airport on Willingdon Island which was built by the British Residency of Kingdom of Kochi and was utilised only for transporting British officials working on the development of the Cochin Port. The airstrip was later converted into a military airport by the Indian Navy and was considered a strategic site for their headquarters in Southern India. After independence, although Indian Navy operated the airport, civilians were allowed to use air facilities. The 1980 economic boom demanded international transportation giving rise to the need of an international airport in Kochi. Later in 1990, a resolution was passed by the Kerala Chamber of Commerce to expand the airport to be able to accommodate direct international flights. However, due to security reasons, the resolution was rejected by the Navy and due to lack of funds the government presented a Public Private Partnership model. This model is the brainchild of Mr. V. J. Kurian who was the district director of Ernakulam at that time. The proposal was approved in 1993 and the total estimation cost of constructing the airport was about INR 100 billion.
